How Americans Volunteer In The Age Of Trump
HuffPost
For Chicagoan Adlin Acevedo, volunteering with her kids is a way to teach them not to take what they have for granted and to give back to the low-income community where she grew up ― the largely Puerto Rican neighborhood of Humboldt Park. Her 8-year-old daughter and 13-year-old son love buying backpacks and school supplies for the children of veterans there, as well as serving food to veterans during the annual Hope Walk, both events organized by Volunteers of America.
“You see the statistics about homeless veterans ― how could these people have made such a huge sacrifice for me and my family and they come back to nothing,” says Acevedo, 34, who works in financial services. “As a country we don’t do enough to make sure they’re okay. We should be willing to at least try to help with whatever we can.”

Someone You Should Know: Volunteers of America of Illinois
CBS Chicago: Someone You Should Know
Reporter: Harry Porterfield (CBS) — It’s hard for young veterans with families to find homes, and they can end up homeless. A group called Volunteers of America is trying to help. CBS 2’s Harry Porterfield reports. Hope Manor II, a campus-like housing complex is bringing a new look and new hope to the ever-troubled Englewood community. Located at 60th and Halsted, it is the work of Volunteers of America and is dedicated to serving veterans. “We try to create affordable housing that doesn’t look like affordable housing,” says Nancy Hughes Moyer, the group’s president and CEO. Sharnay Buchanan, an Army veteran, moved in with her five kids a year ago. “It was hard to transition back to civilian life,” she says. The development is 73 town house units ranging in size from studio to four-bedroom. Each comes fully furnished. If residents have income, they are required to pay a portion toward rent, Moyer says. Hundreds are on the waiting list.
